The actor who played him, Larry Hagman, is now a pitch man for solar energy.
Hagman is the spokesman for SolarWorld, a German manufacturer of solar panels.
With fellow actor Ed Begley Jr., he also serves on the board of the Solar Electric Light Fund, a nonprofit that provides solar power and wireless communications to poor communities around the world.
Hagman concedes that a modern-day J.R. would probably still invest in oil, but he would also place bets on alternative energy.
In a recent SolarWorld ad, he takes a shot Sarah Palin’s pro-oil refrain.
“Shine, baby, shine,” Hagman says.
