Back in September, when Congress was debating the financial bailout, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich went on Fox News to decry how Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac had so “many politicians beholden to them” that no one would step up to protect American taxpayers.

It sounds like the setup line of a joke, but in reality the two are actually having a serious discussion about one topic they can agree upon - global climate change.

Lawrence Haas isn’t the first to suggest that Democrats might blow a sure thing.

Yet Haas, vice president of the U.S.-based Committee on the Present Danger, offers a theory that goes well beyond the Democrats-always-shoot-themselves-in-the-foot school of thought.

He suggests that the party may lose the White House in 2008 because of its stance on national security.

Sheldon Adelson, the New York Times writes today, “may well be the richest American that most people have never heard of.”

But Republicans certainly know the name. Adelson, who personally cleared $500 million when he sold the Comdex trade show to Softbank and has since made millions more in the casino & convention industry, is a major donor to GOP causes.
