Muckety down

Investors can throw out all the complicated metrics, graphs and algorithms.

Instead, they should listen for notes of deception in CEO and CFO conference calls.

David F. Larcker Anastasia A. Zakolyukina of Stanford Graduate School of Business analyzed the language of earnings calls and found that misleading CEOs and CFOs use more references to general knowledge and fewer to shareholder value.

Deceptive CEOS often avoid referring directly to themselves, saying “we” rather than “I.” While they’re less likely to use words conjuring extreme negative emotions, they favor super-charged positives, such as “fantastic.”

This is hardly a new technique. Ernest Hemingway’s advice to writers also holds true for financial analysts: “The most essential gift for a good writer is a built-in, shockproof shit detector.”
