We were early adapters of the Kindle, and at first blush, we were smitten.

Living in Manhattan, walking long distances or taking the subway, the lightweight, wireless Kindle brought welcome relief to lugging books in a backpack.

But then we dropped our Kindle on the subway platform, at a critical plot point in Stieg Larsson’s first book. We rushed to a book store to buy a print edition to find out what happened next.

The replacement Kindle, sent several days later at an expense of $100, couldn’t establish a wireless connection. So we received a third Kindle.

Last month, we moved to the Finger Lakes, which, despite being well populated and a vacation spot for many urban residents, is outside the coverage area of the Kindle “Whispernet” network. Amazon’s help desk assures us we can download purchases directly to the PC, and then transfer to the Kindle, in seven easy steps.

This might have passed as a user-friendly device before the iPad, the Nook, and other competitors. No more.

The financially debilitating “information yearns to be free” ethic that has dominated the web since its inception has spread to e-books.

As the Washington Post recently noted, most of the bestsellers at Amazon’s Kindle store are free.

Although the list can change moment to moment, when we checked Tuesday morning, 75 of the top 100 titles were giveaways. The top price was $9.99.

The book industry is being transformed by digital distribution just as the newspaper industry has been. Let’s hope book publishers have been paying attention.
