Manafort and former deputy indicted; another Trump campaign adviser pleads guilty

A former chairman of the Donald Trump presidential campaign, along with his former deputy, has been indicted in the independent counsel investigation of possible connections between the campaign and Russia.

Paul Manafort and his longtime associate Rick Gates surrendered to the FBI Monday morning. The two have been accused of money laundering, tax evasion and foreign lobbying charges. (The Justice Department has posted the full indictment.)

Manafort allegedly lobbied for Ukraine and a major Ukrainian political party without registering with the U.S. government. They’re accused of laundering millions of dollars by funneling the proceeds into foreign companies and bank accounts.

The indictment details lavish spending by Manafort, accusing him paying the bills through offshore accounts and failing to report such expenditures as income. Payments allegedly covered seven-figure expenditures for home improvements, antique rugs, men’s clothing and landscaping.

The Trump campaign fired Manafort in August 2016, after media reports about his close ties to Ukrainian leaders friendly to Russia.

The interactive Muckety map above shows some of those connections. Russian companies are represented by salmon-colored boxes.

In related news, a former foreign relations adviser to the Trump campaign, George Papadopoulos, reportedly has pleaded guilty to charges resulting from the Mueller campaign. Bloomberg reports that Papadopoulos admitted to making false statements during an interview with the FBI.

According to a federal document that has been unsealed, Papadopoulos lied about when he made contact with a foreign professor with connections to the Russian government.

Conversations with the professor, who said he had “dirt” on Hillary Clinton in the form of “thousands of emails,” occurred after Papadopoulos learned he would be joining the Trump campaign. Papadopoulos also met with a Russian national who had been described as the niece of Russia President Vladimir Putin. He later learned that she was no relation.

According to the document, Papadopoulos worked to arrange a meeting between the campaign and the Russian government.

Papadopoulos, as shown in the Muckety map below, advised Ben Carson’s campaign before joining Trump. He previously was an intern at the Hudson Institute.

Correction: This story initially mischaracterized Papadopoulos’s relationship with the Hudson Institute. After the error appeared here and in other media, the think tank issued the following statement:

“Our records indicate that Mr. Papadopoulos started at Hudson Institute as an unpaid intern in 2011 and subsequently provided research assistance on a contractual basis to one of our senior fellows in 2013 and 2014. Mr. Papadopoulos was never a salaried employee of Hudson Institute, and the Institute has had no relationship with him since 2014.”
