Time for diverse NYC museum leadership

By Laurie Bennett

For such a big, diverse city, New York has a museum leadership that’s remarkably incestuous. And white.

The New York Times writes that cultural institution boards are “strikingly white.”

Mayor Bill de Blasio is so concerned with the lack of diversity that he has threatened to reduce funding to institutions that don’t make changes.

The boards of major museums in the city are a subset of the power elite, which is is also strikingly white. And many of these people, as the interactive Muckety map above shows, sit on more than one board. Just one of the individuals in the above map, Infor CEO Charles Phillips Jr., a trustee of both the American Museum of Natural History and the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, is African-American.

Not surprisingly, the Times found that the Studio Museum in Harlem, at 82 percent, has the greatest racial diversity of the major organizations. Non-whites make up about a fourth of the boards at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and MoMA. The American Museum of Natural History has just 10 percent diversity.
