Friday was such a big news day that it was easy to overlook a story that could have important implications for the Russia investigation.

President Trump announced that the U.S. Cyber Command (CYBERCOM), until now subordinate to the U.S. Strategic Command, would be “elevated” to the status of a unified combatant command in its own right.

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis Trump said, is also reviewing whether to severe CYBERCOM from the National Security Agency.

Both CYBERCOM and NSA are headed by Mike Rogers, a Navy admiral who has held the jobs since 2014, when he was nominated by President Barack Obama.

The Daily Beast points out that Rogers is “the last intelligence chief standing to have stated that Russia meddled in U.S. elections.”

He is likely to know details of any dealings between Trump the candidate, Trump the president, Trump’s staff and Vladimir Putin, the Russian president who still practices the tradecraft he learned as a KGB agent.

Will the White House allow Rogers to continue wearing two hats, take away one or leave him altogether bare headed?

Trump’s firing of former FBI Director James Comey and former national security adviser Michael Flynn would suggest that those with knowledge of possible Trump-Russia ties can pose a bigger threat outside the tent.
