Greatest contortionist of Trump White House is gone

Steve Bannon, chief strategist and senior counselor to President Donald Trump, is leaving the administration.

Bannon’s departure has been rumored before, but the former Breitbart chairman reportedly angered the president with recent remarks to the American Prospect.

Bannon joined the Trump campaign last year and has often been described as the White House Svengali. The media focus on Bannon no doubt riled the president, as did a recent book by Bloomberg reporter Joshua Green, titled “Devil’s Bargain: Steve Bannon, Donald Trump, and the Storming of the Presidency.”

Anthony Scaramucchi, the recently departed communications director, slammed Bannon in the New Yorker interview that led to his dismissal. In recent days, Scaramucchi has suggested that Bannon was leaking stories to the media.

National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster also distanced himself from Bannon in recent public appearances. When NBC’s Chuck Todd asked if he could still work with Bannon, McMaster answered in general, evasive terms.

“I get to work together with a broad range of talented people and it is a privilege every day to enable the national security team,” McMaster said.

Although Bannon no longer has a White House post, don’t expect him to go away. He’s likely to continue his ties to Breitbart and to the Mercer family, financial supporters of Breitbart and the Trump campaign.
