Mueller’s former law firm has many entanglements

As a prominent D.C. law firm, WilmerHale was bound to face some crossing loyalties when Robert Mueller was named special counsel in the investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.

Mueller, a former director of the FBI, left his position as partner at the firm to take on the new role. Yet other partners represent central characters in the probe.

Jamie Gorelick represents the president’s daughter, Ivanka Trump, and son-in-law, Jared Kushner. Another partner, Reginald Brown, represents Paul Manafort, former Trump campaign chair.

Reuters reports that the Trump administration is considering using an obscure ethics rule to limit Mueller’s investigation.

According to Reuters, the Code of Federal Regulations restricts new government lawyers from investigating their prior firm’s clients during the year after their hiring. Trump issued an executive order in January lengthening the period to two years.

Politico quotes Richard Painter, a former White House ethics lawyer under George W. Bush, as saying the requirement could be waived by the Justice Department.
