Mapping the Clinton money stream

By Laurie Bennett

August 23, 2016 at 8:43am

As an illustration of how dollars and influence flow in and out of Clinton Inc., we’ve mapped a name unfamiliar to most voters.

Joe Kiani
Joe Kiani testifying at 2013 Senate hearing.

Joe Kiani is the founder of Masimo Corp., a medical technology company based in Irvine, Calif.

Although most of its business is done in the Americas, Masimo also operates in Europe, Asia and the Mideast. Hospitals around the world use company products to monitor oxygen and carbon monoxide in the blood, pulse and respiration rates and brain function.

Neither Kiani nor his company has been mentioned in the email messages of Hillary Clinton made public to date.

But that doesn’t mean he hasn’t done business with the Clintons:

  • Kiani and his wife, Sarah, are bundlers for the Clinton presidential campaign. He gave $100,000 to the Hillary Victory Fund in April.
  • The Masimo Foundation, chaired by Kiani, donated $2.5 million to the Clinton Foundation in 2014-2015.
  • The Masimo Foundation also gave $1.25 million to another organization headed by Kiani, the Patient Safety Movement Foundation, which in turn paid Bill Clinton $630,000 to speak at two conferences.
  • Former U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin, who ran against Bill Clinton in the 1992 Democratic primaries and endorsed Hillary Clinton’s 2016 bid a year ago, joined the Masimo corporate board in December. His compensation so far in stock and fees, according to the company’s most recent proxy statement, totals $143,545.

Harkin’s daughter, Jennifer, was hired by the State Department’s Bureau for Global Criminal Justice in 2010, during Hillary Clinton’s tenure as secretary of state.

For a brief C-SPAN video showing the Kianis arriving at the White House for the Singapore state dinner earlier this month, skip to 1:13:
