The National Enquirer has been tough on Donald Trump’s Republican opponents, most recently with a cover story reporting that Ted Cruz has had at least five mistresses.
Cruz called the article “garbage” and accused the Trump campaign of planting it.
The Daily Beast, meanwhile, reports that “allies of former GOP presidential hopeful Marco Rubio were involved in spreading the smears.”
Trump has not been the object of similar scandal mongering by the scandal-mongering tabloid, but that may be because he’s a close friend of the paper’s publisher, David Pecker. (Yes, that really is his name.)
As New York magazine wrote in October: “Trump’s scandal-filled personal life would be yuge! for the supermarket tabloid, but to the Enquirer, it seems, friendship is forever.”
