In addition to spending millions to maintain a high profile in Washington, the pharmaceutical industry has a strong presence on the boards of hospitals and research centers around the country.
The interactive Muckety map above shows pharma ties at just two well-known health institutions - Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and New York-Presbyterian Hospital.
Merck has connections to both. Sloan-Kettering’s president and CEO Craig B. Thompson is a director of the drug company, as is cancer center overseer William B. Harrison Jr.
Another Merck director, Rochelle B. Lazarus, is a trustee of New York-Presbyterian.
The map displays additional links from the hospitals to Bristol-Myers Squibb, Eli Lilly and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals.
A study published last year in the Journal of the American Medicine Association showed close ties between Big Pharma and teaching hospitals.
