Russian bank hires former U.S. senators

Two former U.S. senators are lobbying on behalf of a Russian bank that was sanctioned by the U.S. in July.

Gazprombank has hired John Breaux and Trent Lott to represent its interests in Washington, according to a filing last week.

The bank is partly owned by Gazprom, the Russian gas producer that has yet to be sanctioned for the nation’s aggression in Ukraine.

The two senators-turned-lobbyists have a lengthy client list in the U.S. Both men represent such corporations as Amazon, Citigroup, Exxon Mobil, General Electric, Lockheed Martin and Goldman Sachs.

Note: The Times-Picayune later quoted Breaux as saying the lobbying report was filed “out of an abundance of caution,” but that actions by Lott and himself did not constitute lobbying. A new form would be filed saying the two are doing no more work for the Russian bank, he said.
