J Street, like other Jewish lobby groups in the U.S., has repeated its support for Israel in the current conflict with Hamas.
Yet it has also expressed empathy “for families in Gaza whose innocent children are dying.”
As CNN points out, J Street has, since its founding in 2008, “pushed the limits of pro-Israel views accepted by the establishment.”
Earlier this year it was denied entry into the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations.
A self-described haven for “pro-Israel, pro-peace Americans,” the organization has multiple connections to the Obama administration, as the interactive Muckety map above shows.
Board members Alan Solomont and Louis Susman raised money for Obama’s first presidential run and were rewarded with ambassadorships. A third board member, Sylvia Kaplan, also raised money for the campaign. Her husband, Samuel Kaplan, served as Obama’s ambassador to Morocco.
Two other directors, Alexandra Stanton and Robert S. Stein, raised money for the president’s re-election in 2012.
