Almaz-Antey, the manufacturer of the Buk ground-to-air missile system, was among the Russian companies sanctioned by the U.S. earlier this week.

A Buk missile is believed to have been used yesterday to shoot down Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 near the eastern border of Ukraine, killing all 298 on board.

President Obama said Friday that U.S. officials believe the missile was fired from a region controlled by Russian-backed separatists.

“We know that they are heavily armed and they are trained,” he said. “That is not an accident. That is happening because of Russian support.”

Almaz-Antey isn’t the only Russian defense company sanctioned by the U.S. Bombmaker Bazalt and rocket manufacturer Mashinostroyenia were also added to the sanctions list on Wednesday, as were weapons makers Kalashnikov and KBP Instrument Design Bureau.

Other companies cited for sanctions included Radio-Electronic Technologies, which makes weapons control systems, and Uralvagonzavod, a government owned tank manufacturer.

The sanctioned firms are depicted by the orange boxes in the second tier of the Muckety map above.

Almaz-Antey was founded by the Russian government in 2002, combining dozens of manufacturing and research concerns around the country. Its air defense missile systems and other products were designed for use by the Russian military.

Pravda reported in March that President Vladimir Putin had approved the sale of the company’s S-400 missile system to China.

Three years earlier, then-President Dmitry Medvedev prevented Almaz-Antey from selling missiles to Iran.
