Richard Mellon Scaife, heir to the Mellon banking fortune and a major funder of conservative causes, died Friday, the day after his 82nd birthday.

Scaife’s involvement in national politics spanned 50 years, beginning with his backing of Barry Goldwater in the 1964 presidential campaign. In the following decades, he supported a succession of Republican candidates for the White House and gave millions of dollars to efforts to unseat President Bill Clinton.

Yet in 2008, his newspaper, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, endorsed Hillary Rodham Clinton for president.

The interactive Muckety map above shows Mellon’s personal connections and a partial family tree. His great-grandfather, Richard Mellon Scaife, started the company that became Mellon Financial, which merged to become Bank of New York Mellon.

His grandfather, Richard Beatty Mellon, and grand-uncle, Andrew William Mellon, were co-founders of Union Steel.
