Former Senate Majority Leader Howard Baker died Thursday at age 88.

Baker had so many family ties to American politics that it was hard to keep count.

His wife is Nancy Kassebaum, a former U.S. senator and the daughter of Kansas Gov. Alf Landon. He previously was married to Joy Dirksen, who died in 1993. She was the daughter of Sen. Everett M. Dirksen.

Both his father, Howard H. Baker, and his stepmother, Irene Bailey Baker, served in the House.
