While Jim DeMint has quickly become the face of the Heritage Foundation since becoming its president, the conservative group’s chairman, Thomas A. Saunders III, also bears watching.
Saunders, elected chairman of Heritage in 2009, is a Wall Street stalwart.

After working as a managing director of Morgan Stanley, he founded the private equity firm Saunders Karp & Megrue, which later merged with Apax Partners. He currently heads the investment firm Ivor & Co.
During the 2012 election, Saunders was a big donor to American Crossroads, the super PAC advised by Karl Rove. He has been a loyal contributor over the years to the Republican Party and has given millions to the University of Virginia.
His daughter, Calvert Saunders Moore, is married to George B. Moore, whose father headed the overseas expansion of the company that became Citibank.
