If ever a name conveyed dynasty, it was that of Anthony Drexel Duke, who died Wednesday at age 95.
Duke, described in his New York Times obituary as “a scion of three of America’s wealthiest families,” was the founder of Boys & Girls Harbor, a New York nonprofit.
He was born to privilege. His mother, Cordelia Drexel Biddle, was a member of the Drexel banking family. His father, Anthony Drexel Duke, was an heir to the Duke tobacco fortune.
He also was connected to the wealthy Biddle family in multiple ways. His mother and her brother, Anthony J. Drexel Biddle Jr., married Duke siblings, his father and his Aunt Mary, respectively.
It’s confusing. You obviously need a Muckety map.
