And so, a new award season begins.

Filmmakers with their eyes on the prize might want to contemplate the Muckety map below.

Nine living actors have each appeared in three movies that won the Oscar for best film:

· Robert De Niro
· Colin Firth
· Ralph Fiennes
· Morgan Freeman
· Dustin Hoffman
· Diane Keaton
· Jack Nicholson
· Talia Shire
· Meryl Streep

The record among actors living and dead is held by Franklyn Farnum, who had roles in seven Oscar winners, including “Going My Way,” “The Lost Weekend” and “Gentleman’s Agreement.”

Our personal favorite is John Cazale, who appeared in three Oscar-winning films in an acting career cut short by his death at age 42. Cazale was in “The Godfather,” “The Godfather Part II” and “The Deer Hunter.”
