George Soros is back!

His conservative critics would say he never left the U.S. political sphere, but until recently the liberal billionaire has stayed away from big lobbying in Washington.

The Washington Post notes that the Open Society Policy Center, the affiliate arm of Soros’s Open Policy Foundation, tripled its lobbying bill last year.

The center spent $11 million, three times the amount it spent the year before. Its interests included foreign aid, defense spending and prison reform.

Stephen Rickard, executive director of the policy center, told the Post that much of the increased spending was attributable to the center’s support for immigration reform.

Soros’s son, Jonathan, is a director of the center. Other board members include Sherrilyn Ifill, head of the NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund; Gara LaMarche, former CEO of Atlantic Philanthropies; and Aryeh Neier, former executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union.
