Pharma’s revolving door

Even supporters of Obamacare have a hard time defending the deal the White House made with the drug companies.

The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America supported the package only after the administration agreed to limit the government’s ability to bargain for cheaper drug prices.

In the years since, several top administration officials have been hired by the industry.

Liz Fowler helped draft the health care legislation as a Senate staffer before joining the White House. She left her job as deputy director of the Office of Consumer Information and Oversight at Health and Human Services in 2012. She’s now VP for global health policy at Johnson & Johnson.

Nancy-Ann M. DeParle, former health adviser to the president, is now a partner at Consonance Capital Partners, a private equity firm investing in health-care companies. She’s also a director of CVS Caremark.

Elizabeth Engel, former HHS deputy assistant secretary, became a lobbyist with Glover Park Group. Her pharma clients include Dendreon, Sucampo and Trygg.

Dora Hughes, former counselor to HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, is now senior policy adviser at Sidley Austin, a law firm representing pharma firms and other health-care interests.
