Morgan Stanley’s many entanglements

Morgan Stanley announced this week that it had agreed to pay $1.25 billion to settle claims by the Federal Housing Finance Agency.

The agency had accused it of misleading Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in the sale of mortgage-backed securities.

Ten months after the federal suit was filed, in September 2011, Morgan Stanley named Robert Herz to its board of directors.

Herz, a former partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers, had become a member of the Fannie Mae board before the federal claims.

So at the time of the settlement, he was a director of both the offending party and the victim.

For financial companies the size of Morgan Stanley, such entanglements - intentional or otherwise - are common.

The interactive Muckety map above shows Morgan directors and top execs, including Herz, who also sit on other Fortune 500 boards.

Ten members of the board have at least one such connection.
