In naming Jon Huntsman Jr. as its new chairman, the Atlantic Council continues a trend of choosing Republicans with ties to the Obama White House.
Huntsman, who sought the Republican nomination for president in 2012 and raised money for John McCain’s campaign in 2008, served as President Obama’s ambassador to China.

His predecessor, Chuck Hagel, has a similar bipartisan history. Hagel was a Republican senator before becoming Obama’s secretary of Defense.
James L. Jones, who was chairman before Hagel, left the post to become Obama’s national security adviser. Jones previously served in the George W. Bush administration as supreme allied commander in Europe.
