The Wal-Mart lobby

By Laurie Bennett

November 30, 2013 at 8:33am

As protesters target Wal-Mart stores across the country, the company continues its all-out lobby effort in Washington.

Wal-Mart doubled its lobby spending in 2007 - from $3 million to more than $6 million, and its annual payouts have stayed above the $6 million level since.

The trend is likely to continue this year, as the company faces mounting criticism from labor and liveable-wage groups.

The global retailer has reported spending $5.3 million already in 2013, and contracted with four new lobby shops during the year. The most recent, Lincoln Policy Group, is headed by Blanche Lincoln, the former Democratic senator and congresswoman who represented Wal-Mart’s home state of Arkansas.

The interactive Muckety map above shows current lobby firms and former members of Congress who represent the company. Altogether, more than 70 lobbyists argue Wal-Mart positions on taxes, labor, trade and other issues.

The company also has a PAC which has spent more than $3 million for each of the past three elections.
