The family of Michael Skakel, a Kennedy cousin convicted of murder in 2002, has spent millions trying to free him.

As the New York Times writes: “Skakel and his family have spared no expense in their efforts to clear his name.”

The funds derived from the fortune made by Skakel’s grandfather, George Skakel, founder of Great Lakes Carbon Corporation.

Michael Skakel is related to the Kennedy clan through his father’s sister, Ethel Kennedy, widow of former Sen. Robert F. Kennedy.

He was found guilty in 2002 of having killed Greenwich neighbor Martha Moxley. In the years since, the family has hired new lawyers, private investigators and expert witnesses. The team included former Solicitor Gen. Theodore Olson, who petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to hear the case.

Last month, a Connecticut judge overturned the verdict. Skakel is scheduled to appear in court tomorrow to request a release on bail, pending a new trial.
