Wal-Mart’s ties to the Environmental Defense Fund

Wal-Mart and the Environmental Defense Fund are enjoying an extremely close relationship, Grist notes.

The Walton family, majority owner of Wal-Mart stock, has given $66 million to the EDF since 2005. Sam R. Walton, son of Wal-Mart chairman S. Robson Walton, is a member of the fund’s board of trustees.

EDF, in turn, has praised Wal-Mart’s sustainability program.

In an interview published by Fortune last month, EDF President Fred Krupp mentioned Wal-Mart as one of the companies he admired.

As Stacy Mitchell writes in Grist:

For the Waltons, the donations are a bargain, giving Walmart’s environmental announcements an instant veneer of green credibility. It’s a great deal for EDF, too. Over the last two years, Walton money has supplied about one-eighth of the organization’s roughly $100 million annual budget.
