The Koch offensive on Obamacare

The money trails are deliberately roundabout, which can create a complicated Muckety map.

Nevertheless, the Koch brothers’ efforts to block Obamacare are readily visible below:

Working down from the top, you’ll see Koch companies at in the first row, followed by the billionaire brothers Charles and David Koch.

Some of their current (solid line) and former (dotted line) lieutenants appear in the next row, followed by a few of the Koch foundations.

Central to the paths leading to opposition to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is an organization called Freedom Partners, which has provided funding to a slew of groups. (Roll your mouse over connecting lines to see the relationships.)

For more information about the strategizing that led to the current shutdown, see the New York Times piece from Sunday, titled “A Federal Budget Crisis Months in the Planning.”

With public concerns about the shutdown and the debt ceiling mounting, the Kochs and other Obamacare opponents have taken a step back from the congressional showdown.

Koch Industries spokesman Philip Ellender sent a letter Wednesday to U.S. senators saying, “Koch believes that Obamacare will increase deficits, lead to an overall lowering of the standard of healthcare in America, and raise taxes. However, Koch has not taken a position on the legislative tactic of tieing the continuing resolution to defunding Obamacare – nor have we lobbied on legislative provisions defunding Obamacare.”
