Mapping liberal foundations

Yesterday, after seeing a Muckety user’s map of conservative foundations, a tweeter called for a similar map of liberal grantors.

The data was there for the taking, @LA_Crystal. You just had to spend some time playing with it.

Above is a Muckety map we created, showing some major liberal funders of left-leaning nonprofits and think tanks.

The top row shows individuals heading the foundations.

George Soros

It will come as no shock that philanthropists George Soros and Herbert Sandler appear there.

More surprising is the inclusion of a Rockefeller. Google Chairman Eric Schmidt and his wife, Wendy, also contribute to lefty groups, as do Getty Oil heir Anne Catherine Getty Earhart and billionaire Jon Stryker, a gay rights activist.

The next row shows their foundations.

Think tanks receiving funds appear in the third row. The Center for American Progress, probably the most prominent of the liberal organizations in Washington, has been supported by every foundation shown.

(Mapmaking tip: The CAP page would have been a good place to start. You could look for funders, expand their listings, see what other groups they fund, and then who else funds those groups.)

The bottom row of our map shows other nonprofit groups receiving grants, including the ACLU, the Tides Foundation and the Natural Resources Defense Council.
