Lobbyists work the DMZ in the billionaire space war

By Laurie Bennett

Bloomberg News wrote Friday about the “billionaire space race” - a competition between Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos for control of a NASA space pad.

Musk, who made his fortune with PayPal before launching Tesla Motors, is bidding through his startup, Space Exploration Technologies.

Bezos, chairman and CEO of Amazon and owner of the Washington Post, is competing with his own space company, Blue Origin.

Both camps have hired big-name Washington lobbyists to plead their case. (The lobby shops are represented by the darker boxes in the interactive Muckety map above.)

Yet while the rich guys may be bumping heads, their lobbyists aren’t.

Patton Boggs represents both Musk’s Spacex and Bezos’s Amazon. Two former members of Congress - John Breaux (D-LA) and Trent Lott (R-MS) - lobby for both firms.

Blue Origin recently hired K&L Gates, which previously represented Spacex and Tesla.
