WPP - the foreign powerhouse on K Street

One of the biggest influencers in Washington is a foreign company unknown to many Americans.

WPP Group, based in the UK and Ireland, describes itself as the “world’s largest communications services group.”

Communications encompasses advertising, branding, marketing, PR and big data. In the U.S. capital, it means lobbying and spin.

WPP owns half a dozen lobby shops in Washington. Only one - Ogilvy Government Relations - ranks in the top 20 money makers.

However, with combined lobby revenues of $44.9 million last year, WPP-owned firms would rank second if considered as a single firm. (Only Patton Boggs, with 2012 lobby income of $45.8, makes more.)

The WPP client list includes many big players, including Wal-Mart, AT&T, Verizon, JPMorgan Chase and Apple.

(You can see the clients of any lobby firm - the darker boxes in the map - by doubleclicking on them. They’re also listed below.)
