The interlocking world of pro sports ownership

For serial sports team owners, teams are like pistachios.

One is never enough.

The Muckety map above shows some of the major nodes on the global network of pro sports ownership:

  • Fenway Sports Group - owner of the Boston Red Sox and Liverpool F.C. soccer team. A minority owner of the Red Sox, Jeffrey Vinik, also owns Tampa Bay Lightning of the NHL.
  • Stan Kroenke, who is married to Wal-Mart heir Ann Walton, owns the Denver Nuggets of the NBA, the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer, the Colorado Avalanche of the NHL, Colorado Mammoth of the National Lacrosse League and St. Louis Rams of the NFL. He also has the biggest stake in Arsenal, an English Premier League football club.
  • Malcolm Glazer, owner of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, owns another English football club, Manchester United.

Like Kroenke, a number of American owners have ventured into soccer.

  • Lewis Wolff, owner of the Oakland Athletics, owns the San Jose Earthquakes.
  • Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots, owns the New England Revolution.
  • Clark Hunt, chairman and CEO of the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs, owns FC Dallas. His father, the late Lamar Hunt, was a founder of Major League Soccer.
  • Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, owner of the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks and the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers, also owns the Seattle Sounders.
  • AEG, a subsidiary of Anschutz Company, owns both the Houston Dynamo and the Los Angeles Galaxy. Company owner Philip Anschutz is a part-owner of the Los Angeles Kings and the Los Angeles Lakers.

Our interactive Muckety map shows just a portion of the interconnections. Little Caesars Pizza co-founder Mike Ilitch, for example, owns both the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Red Wings.

Altogether, we count more than 70 individuals and companies in the U.S. that currently or formerly owned more than one major sports team.
