Lindy Boggs, a skilled politician and diplomat who succeeded her husband in Congress after he was killed in a plane crash, died Saturday at age 97.

Boggs took the post of her husband, then-Majority Leader Hale Boggs, after his plane disappeared over Alaska in 1972.

She served nine terms in the House, and later was named U.S. ambassador to the Holy See.

She was the mother of Thomas Hale Boggs Jr., head of Patton Boggs lobby firm, and journalist Cokie Roberts. Another daughter, Barbara Boggs Sigmund, died while serving as mayor of Princeton, NJ.
