Leakers have a support group

Behind the revelations about National Security Agency surveillance is another little-known network called the Freedom of the Press Foundation.

The nonprofit group advocates for what it calls “transparency journalism,” including support for whistleblowers.

Its board includes several well-known names associated with leaks.

In the news at the moment are foundation directors Glenn Greenwald and Laura Poitras, co-authors of NSA coverage based on information leaked by Edward Snowden.

Poitras, a documentary filmmaker and winner of a MacArthur genius grant, shared bylines with both Greenwald, in the Guardian, and with Barton Gellman, who has written about NSA activities for the Washington Post.

Daniel Ellsberg, who provided the top-secret Pentagon Papers to the media four decades ago, is also a foundation director.

Others on the board include actor John Cusack and John Perry Barlow, former lyricist for the Grateful Dead and a co-founder of the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

On its web site, the Freedom of the Press Foundation is seeking donations to pay a court stenographer for the trial of Bradley Manning, the U.S. soldier accusing of providing classified information to WikiLeaks.

It is also collecting funds for WikiLeaks, the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, the Center for Public Integrity and Truthout.
