The Newman dynasty scores Hollywood

By Laurie Bennett

American moviedom would be immeasurably different without the Newman family.

Singer and songwriter Randy Newman, who composed soundtracks for the “Toy Story” series and “Monsters Inc.,” recently was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Newman, of course, is well known for songs such as “Short People” and “Feels Like Home.”

Less appreciated is the incredible impact of his family on the music of movies.

Although his father was a doctor, three uncles - Alfred, Lionel and Emil Newman - were composers.

Alfred Newman, music director for 20th Century-Fox, won nine Oscars. Brother Lionel was vice president for music at the studio.

Alfred Newman’s sons David and Thomas are also prolific film composers.

A third generation, through nephew Joey Newman, is making its mark with compositions for TV movies and series.

The Muckety map above shows just some of the films and TV shows scored by the first two generations of Newmans.
