“Citizen Kane,” the Orson Welles film that many consider the best of all time, premiered on this date in 1941, at New York’s Palace Theater.

The Muckety map below shows connections of some of the major players in the movie.

Charles Foster Kane’s life was loosely based on that of newspaper mogul William Randolph Hearst, founder of the Hearst chain of newspapers and grandfather of former Symbionese Liberation Army captive/member Patty Hearst.

Orson Welles, then just 25 years old, directed, co-wrote and starred. Joseph Cotten and Agnes Moorehead, frequent collaborators with Welles, also had roles.

Cotten played Jedediah Leland, conscience to the increasingly ambitious newsman. Moorehead, better known to later generations as Samantha’s mother in “Bewitched,” played Kane’s mother, Mary Kane.

Herman J. Mankiewicz, grandfather of former “At the Movies” co-host Ben Mankiewicz, co-wrote the screenplay.

Robert Wise, who would go on to direct “The Sound of Music” and “West Side Story,” was film editor.
