Kochs weigh purchase of Tribune newspapers

The libertarian Koch brothers, seeking new ways to broaden their already significant influence on American politics, are considering an acquisition of eight newspapers from the Tribune Company, the New York Times reports.

It’s an idea that was discussed at a retreat three years ago, when participants put together a 10-year strategy for achieving smaller government, lower taxes and less regulation.

Tribune emerged from bankruptcy at the end of 2012, after a disastrous ownership run by real estate magnate Sam Zell. It hired investment banks in February to explore the sale of its regional newspapers, which include the influential Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune, the Hartford Courant and the Baltimore Sun.

The New York Times report quotes an unnamed source as saying a Koch representative contacted Los Angeles Times publisher Eddy W. Hartenstein this month to discuss a bid.
