These may well be the think tank glory days, when major research organizations land support from wealthy donors who help grow budgets, staffing and new headquarters.
The Muckety map above shows some of the major funders of conservative think tanks such as the Competitive Enterprise Institute and the Heritage Foundation.
The center orbit of light-shaded boxes shows funders to multiple conservative organizations. The outer orbit of dark cyan-colored boxes shows the think tanks receiving support.
We’ve also put together separate maps for each of the funders:
William E. Simon Foundation - Named for the late treasury secretary, the foundation aims to “strengthen the free enterprise system and the spiritual values on which it rests: individual freedom, initiative, thrift, self-discipline and faith in God.”
Smith Richardson Foundation - Launched by the former chairman of the Vick Chemical Company, the foundation supports development of public policy at home and abroad. Recent grants have supported studies of opposition movements in Russia, Islamist movements, and defense strategies in the face of budget cuts.
