Post-Sandy: Cleanup contracts, lobbyists & campaign dollars

With months of work remaining and billions of dollars yet to be spent, Gov. Chris Christie is already fielding questions about political favors in Hurricane Sandy cleanup efforts.

New Jersey has hired a Florida company, AshBritt Inc., to remove debris.

As the Bergen Record notes, AshBritt’s lobby firm is the BGR Group.

The founding partner of BGR is former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, who supported Christie in his last election. The lobby firm’s chairman is Ed Rogers, who is hosting a $3,800-per-person fundraiser for Christie at his Virginia home this month.

AshBritt also has direct connections to the GOP. Company CEO Randal Perkins was a fundraiser for John McCain’s presidential run in 2008.

Christie has pledged transparency in the awarding cleanup contracts and has asked the state comptroller to set up a review system.
