Is Karl Rove kaput?

Howard Fineman of Huffington Post thinks so.

Fineman points out that Rove first rose to power by squelching the party’s right wing. Now he’s trying a repeat performance.

But times and party demographics have changed.

Concerned about losing fringe candidates who have damaged the GOP reputation, Rove and his compatriots have launched a super PAC called the Conservative Victory Project.

Its mission is to follow William F. Buckley’s admonition to “back the most conservative candidate who can win.”

The move has been applauded by some of the wealthiest Republican donors, who are tired of Democrats winning general elections after so-called “nut cases” win the GOP primaries.

However, there are powerful Republicans outside the Rove bloc who are pushing back, and they also have financial support. Politico points out, FreedomWorks, the Club for Growth, Senate Conservatives Fund, American Majority Action, Tea Party Express and the Family Research Council spent a combined $137 million in the 2012 elections.

To many, Rove symbolizes what’s wrong with the party. As Fineman writes:

Deep-dyed conservatives have a right to ask the Roves of the world what the establishment GOPers have done to erase the debt, limit the reach of the federal government or enhance a libertarian view of the world. The answer, to the Rand Pauls of the world, is simple: nothing.
