Breyer joins Harvard board

In 2004, Harvard University was one of the colleges that dropped its investment in Accel Partners.

While that was bad news at the time for the firm and its managing partner, Jim Breyer, it was ultimately worse news for Harvard.

Accel took an early stake in Facebook, earning a fortune for its investors and for Breyer personally. Forbes estimates his wealth at $1.1 billion.

This week Harvard announced that Breyer had been elected to its governing board, the Harvard Corporation.

He will not have direct oversight of the university endowment, which is supervised by a separate group, the Harvard Management Company.

Yet his expertise, as an investor and as a director of such large corporations as Wal-Mart and News Corp., will no doubt be welcome.

As Bloomberg Businessweek points out, the university endowment last year lost .05 percent, while other Ivy League schools had an average gain of 2.3 percent.
