The Bloomberg lobby

By Laurie Bennett

If there is a lobby big enough to answer the National Rifle Association, it may well be driven by billionaire Michael Bloomberg.

As Politico reports, the mayor of New York has dramatically expanded his presence in Washington in recent years.

An organization he co-chairs, Mayors Against Illegal Guns, spent $200,000 last year on lobbyists.

Bloomberg is also co-chairman of Partnership for a New American Economy, which is working toward immigration reform. The partnership, has hired three lobby firms, spending $290,000 last year on exerting influence in the capital.

Bloomberg’s news and information company, Bloomberg LP, has another five lobby shops working for it. The company spent $810,000 on lobbying in 2012.

And then there’s Independence USA, the PAC Bloomberg established to oppose NRA candidates and support politicians who favor gun reform. The PAC spent more than $8.2 million last year and is currently financing ads in special elections.
