Family name boosts two Dem incumbents in red states

As the 2014 election cycle revs up, two Democratic senators from Republican states hope that family still means something.

Roll Call points out that Mark Pryor of Arkansas and Mary Landrieu of Louisiana have names that are strong political brands, despite their party affiliation.

Pryor’s father, David H. Pryor, was governor of Arkansas and a member of both the U.S. House and Senate.

Landrieu’s father, Moon Landrieu, was Housing and Urban Development secretary during the Carter administration and mayor of New Orleans. Her brother, Mitchell, is the current mayor, having also served as the state’s lieutenant governor. Her sister, Madeleine Landrieu, is an elected appeals court judge.

The bigger the names, the harder they fall, so both incumbents can expect to be deluged by attack ads. No opponents have yet announced in either Senate campaign.
