The many connections of Helena Bonham Carter

By Laurie Bennett

It seems that nearly every film with an accent features Helena Bonham Carter.

So it’s no surprise that she has a role in “Les Miserables,” playing Madame Thénardier, the conniving wife of the innkeeper.

Yet it speaks to Carter’s range that she can portray gentility and evil in concurrent releases. (Broadway.com calls her “chameleonic.”)

She was both Bellatrix Lestrange in the Harry Potter series and Queen Elizabeth in “The King’s Speech.”

In real life, she is both the great-granddaughter of a prime minister of the UK, and the longtime partner Tim Burton, maker of odd, dark movies such as “Edward Scissorhands” and “Beetlejuice.”

Burton’s work often showcases performances by Carter, most memorably in “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.” As the Muckety map above shows, the two have made a succession of movies together.

Carter also has worked previously with several other cast members of “Les Mis.”

Sacha Baron Cohen played Adolfo Pirelli, the Italian barber in “Sweeney Todd.” Anne Hathaway played the White Queen, opposite Carter’s Red Queen, in “Alice in Wonderland.”

Tom Hooper, director of “Les Mis,” also directed “The King’s Speech.”
