Republican Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina will leave the Senate next month to head the Heritage Foundation, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Gov. Nikki Haley, also a Republican, will name a successor to DeMint, who was re-elected in 2010.

DeMint follows Ed Feulner as president of the conservative think tank. According to tax returns, Feulner was paid almost $1.1 million in 2010.
