Legacies have a long tradition on Capitol Hill.

Yet the number of House and Senate members with family who have also served will drop in January, from 44 to 39.

Of the 44 current members with congressional relatives, eight will not return, while three new members will begin new legacies or renew old ones.

The new members:

  • Joseph P. Kennedy III, son of former Rep. Joseph Kennedy II and grandson of former Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, will begin his first term in the House.
  • Donald M. Payne Jr. of New Jersey was sworn in last week to succeed his father, who died in March.
  • Dan Kildee of Michigan was elected to succeed his uncle, Dale E. Kildee, who is retiring after 18 terms.
