Two losers in Mack household

By Laurie Bennett

November 10, 2012 at 11:32am

What are the odds that husband and wife get pink slips on the same day?

Pretty good if you’re a member of the Mack family.

Republican Mary Bono Mack lost her re-election campaign Tuesday in California’s 36th Congressional District, outdone by Democrat Raul Ruiz, an emergency room doctor.

Mack had held the job since the death of her late husband, Sonny Bono, in 1998.

Her current husband, Rep. Connie Mack IV (R-FL), lost his bid for a U.S. Senate seat to Democrat Bill Nelson. In running for the Senate, he gave up his congressional seat in Florida’s 19th District.

Few politicians have more family connections to Congress than Mack. His father, Connie Mack III, served in the House and Senate.

His great-grandfather, Morris Sheppard, and step-great-grandfather, Thomas Connally, were U.S. senators. And his great-great-grandfather, John Levi Sheppard, was a House member.
