Wealthy donors divvy up their super PAC contributions

Together, the two major conservative super PACs have spent nearly $195 million - most of it in opposition to President Obama and in support of Mitt Romney.

That’s more than three times the amount spent by Priorities USA Action, the Obama super PAC.

While the GOP groups share a goal, they often compete for donors.

As our map above shows, many wealthy contributors are supporting both pro-Romney PACs - American Crossroads and Restore Our Future. And as Ken Vogel of Politico wrote this week, if Romney loses, they’ll have a lot of ’splaining to do to their wealthy backers.

American Crossroads, started by Karl Rove, is buying ads promoting Romney and Republican candidates in the House and Senate. Restore Our Future is more focused on the presidential race.

We count seven billionaires who have given to both groups:
Joseph W. Craft III
Kenneth C. Griffin
Bruce Kovner
A. Jerrold Perenchio
Trevor Rees-Jones
Harold C. Simmons
Sam Zell
