Cigarettes, snack foods, lobbyists and government

Here’s a glimpse into how entangled government and business can become when lobbyists have direct connections to politicians.

Abigail Perlman Blunt, a lobbyist for Kraft Foods, points out in quarterly reports to the Senate that she does not lobby the Senate.

That’s because she’s married to Sen. Roy Blunt (R-MO).

She is also a bundler for Mitt Romney, bringing $28,700 in contributions to his presidential campaign. Her husband is Romney’s congressional liaison.

Until recently, she lobbied for the Altria Group, the parent company of Philip Morris and other tobacco products. She moved to Kraft when it was spun off as a separate company.

Although Roy Blunt listed Kraft Foods in his financial disclosure statement as a source of spousal income in 2011, he did not provide the amount. The entry simply says: “N/A.”

Both Kraft and Altria are big lobbyists in Washington. Kraft has spent $1.3 million this year, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Altria has spent $5 million.

And it isn’t just Mitt Romney. I was shocked how widespread the practice of taking campaign contributions from the tobacco industry is on both sides of the aisle. Check out your state congress people on this map: http://ash.org/map/
