Overlaps between the Romney campaign and Romney investments

By Laurie Bennett

October 11, 2012 at 12:03pm

More on the fortunes of Tagg Romney’s private equity firm, Solamere Capital, and its many parallels to his father’s presidential run:

The Investigative Fund, a project of the Nation Institute, points out that one of Mitt Romney’s most active bundlers, Marc J. Leder, is an investor through his company, Sun Capital Partners.

Sun Capital has a big stake in federal policy. Its investment portfolio includes the Scooter Store, which relies heavily on Medicare payments.

The Investigative Fund notes that three Solamere investors - Sun Capital, TPG Capital and TA Associates have partnered in a joint lobbying effort through a group called the Private Equity Growth Capital Council.

The trade group has spent $1.14 million this year lobbying Washington, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Among its issues: taxes and banking regulations, which also happen to be favorite topics of the Romney campaign.

TA Associates and another Solamere investor, H.I.G. Capital, have stakes in dental management companies that rely on Medicaid payments. TA Associates is also an investor in Full Sail University, a for-profit school company praised by Romney on the campaign trail.

An investment of TPG Capital, Immucor Inc., is currently under investigation by the Federal Trade Commission for possible anti-trust violations.
